Hello,

I have a 9.9 BF Honda that I have replace the water in three times. The first time it lasted one short trip. The next two hardly any time at all. I bought the water pumps from a boat repair shop, but I have to be getting the wrong pump. They are torn to shreds, and I have greased them proir to installing and have them going in the proper direction. If anyone has any ideas I would really like to hear from you. The pumps look like the original one and the housing appears to be in good shape. Thanks Greg

If the impellers have failed that fast, either you have run dry, the impeller material is bad, or they are the wrong impeller.

Don't grease the impellers, as the grease can attack the rubber. It does not matter what directions the vanes are when installing, as they will flip to the correct direction when run.

I think I would replace the pump housing, impeller and bottom plate. Just too much money at risk when you are eating impellers to keep trying the same thing.

If you use any grease at all when assembling, just a teensy bit to make it easier to roll the impeller in. Pretty much an invisible thin layer is all you need. If you can do it without, that is even better.

Re: 9.9 BF Honda Water pump problems

The only thing I can add is they don't always flip around the right way automatically. The last pump in my Honda caused the water stream to pulsate when the motor was cold but it smoothed out when the motor warmed up. I thought the pump was just stiff from sitting between uses. When I replaced it one of the vanes was backwards and the creases in the rubber showed it was like that for a long time. The new pump was very smooth. So in this case they didn't auto correct.

Re: 9.9 BF Honda Water pump problems

Guys, I am still having issues. I replaced the impeller, this one was not chewed up but replaced it anyway since I had it. I replaced both gaskets and the plate between the the gaskets and I am still not getting any water. I also blew out the lower unit. Any ideas? Is there anyway I could have some blockage between the lower unit and the top? I have taken the hose off the back where it is connected to the bottom of the motor. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks Greg

Sounds like its time to pull the powerhead, find all peices of the shredded impellers. They must be bloching the waterflow.

Yup. You know it is blocked in there somewhere. No quick method can be certain of getting everything. Serious pita, but has to be done.

Good luck.

Thank you for taking time to reply. I think I may try to blow air into the hose where the water is suppose to come out in hopes of blowing the debris out. If that does not work I will tackle taking the powerhead off.
Thanks
Greg
