I have a 2004 Johnson 4 stroke, the manual states to use Evinrude/Johnson ultra 4 stroke synthetic blend, or an equivalent FC-W approved 10W-40 or 10W-50 oil, when servicing. ( This is the first one)

My question is what would be a FC-W approved oil?
What is a safe oil to use?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: 9.9, 4 stroke oil

The FC-W rating just came out due to the differences that a 4-stroke outboard oil has to endure compared to a car oil. Most 2005 outboard manufacturers require an FC-W rated oil.

The new october issue of Trailer Boats Magazine has an article and test results of both outboard and car oils.

You can use the semi-synthetic Ultra oil and it is good for 200 hrs of use (or once a year) or the less expensive J/E 4-stroke outboard oil. You can also use a quality 10W-40 oil even though it is not FC-W approved, since the same outboard in previous years only required a regular oil if J/E oil was not used. Remember to change oil often.
