What is your model? The 2-cyl motors should be pretty smooth. At what RPM do you get the vibration?

The 9.8A3 weighs 82 pounds, and is available in power tilt. There is also an aftermarket tilting handle available that adds leverage.

That model engine does not vibrate. Is this on an aluminum boat?

If rear swivel bracket and clamps contacts alum transom directly, place a inverted U made from rubber 1-2 mm sheet and mount engine to it, Must fully covered rear swivel's bracket lenght and pass clamp's lenght. Scure tight clamps to it. Probably your swivel bracket load nut is bit loose too, adjust CW accordingly untill a medium load is felt when turning tiller sideways.

Get the 9.8 with power tilt as I suggested, and then add the vibration pad as Luis suggested. The boat is vibrating -- not the motor. It's a harmonic frequency thing. If you isolate the motor better it will dampen the shaking of the boat.

The motor only touch's the transom on the top where is set's on the transom the rest of the motor touch's wood on the inside and outside.the swivel bracket load nut is not loose. ran it today for about a hour and seems to be better the more I run it. I do wish I'd have known about the power tilt. Thank guys for all the good info, I'm having a senior momment.?????

new question why when i let go of the arm the motor doesn't slow down to crawl and turn to the left in a circle?? My johnson's always did that which I think is a good feature. these 4 stoker's are a different animal

Engine doesn't slow down due toi being new, when throttle softens with use, probably will return to near idle. Engine turns left due to having steering load badly adjusted. A boat circling on water is very dangerous, prop can chop boater into pieces if falls without attached kill cord.

It has nothing to do with 4 vs 2 strokes; I has to do with wear and poor installation. There is a throttle friction adjustment... if loose, the throttle will ease back towards idle, especially after the throttle mechanism wears in; but it probably won't go all the way to idle, unless you have extra throttle return spring tension added. The boat should NEVER turn without steering, That would indicate, as Luis noted, that the motor is incorrectly mounted.

Your dealer could have, should have, advised you... but many Internet-based dealers don't take the time to advise the customer, and sell the proper motor to the customer... they just ship boxes, and hope that the boxes actually have outboards in them. Frankly, many of those so-called dealers don't know whether the boxes contain motors or concrete blocks -- they just read the labels, and hope everything is as shown on the sticker (and of course, it usually is correct). They certainly don't do PDI's on the motors, which is technically needed to validate the warranty.

Me...I just push the box out the door with my left big toe. Honestly, we don't even test run them for local customers anymore, unless we charge them for that particular waste of time:) And no test run on this engine, as part of the delivery process, would have affected this non problem as it is not an engine issue.

The issue was that the customer could/should have been made aware of the availability of power tilt. I just like to get up on the soap box and promote local dealers when I can... a bit self-serving, I know :)
