My 9.8 tohatsu MFS9.8A wont start. i cleaned the carb, changed the plugs, still not working. so i took my motor to a mechanic and he told me i needed a new CDI. he wanted something like 300$ for it. now when i go to iboats parts it shows 118.95 for it. (it wont let me post the link) is that the right part? i do have 8 wires going to the plug.

now for the second issue i have. after running the motor for a few hrs (3ish) trolling around and at idle i got a power problem. i get the motor up in rpm and then it sounds and acts like a spun hub. rpm's raise way up and the boat slows down. but if i let it sit (go snorkeling or diving) for an hr or 2 i can start it right up get up on plane and not have an issue. now here is the kicker. i have a buddy who i fish with all the time with a Nissan 9.8 who has the same problem and no mechanic has been able to fix or fix the problem. it only happens after the motor has been running for long periods of time. any in site?

Re: 9.8 tohasu issues

Your mechanic may be including the labor costs for diagnosis and testing. The old-style CD (one connector instead of 2) is available from any Tohatsu/Nissan dealer as 3V1060601M C.D. IGNITION UNIT (CU7228A) $152.04 retail, and takes less than 15 minutes to swap.

If the RPM goes up but the boat slows, you either have a bad hub or are ventilating. Make a pencil or magic marker line on the prop and washer and nut, get the malfunction to occur, and then check to see if the mark is still lined up. If not, you need a new prop.

Def sounds like a slipping prop hub, it just hasn't completely blown all the way, my prop did that and then one day i couldn't go over 1200 rpm and limped home and bought a new prop and was good to go. Even if its not a blown hub is always good to have a spare prop just in case you do blow the hub while running, a quick prop change and your on your way. I keep an extra in the boat because a run shallow water and am more likely to blow the prop hub if I hit the sea floor on occasion.
