I've got an older 9.8 Merc that has a loose plug (stripped threads) to the lower unit. How can I snug this plug up so that I won't lose it in the water?

Is it the upper or lower plug? The upper plug is threaded in a little farther than the screw, so you can use a longer screw. Not sure about the lower one. Did this on my 1962. What's your serial number?

If it is the lower plug, you could epoxy in a piece that is drilled out with a screw in it--having to grind it off to service the LU would tend to keep you from doing that, and you should keep it set up to where you can service it easily and regularly.

If it is the upper plug, get a screw just a little bit longer, and don't overdo it on tightening it.
