I was just given a 9.8 Mercury, S/N 3487290, dealer says somewhere between 72-74 year. Its has a thunderbolt ignition system on it,I spun the engine and getting 100 psi on compression seems ok, I get no fire from either plug wire. When I orginally opened up cowling all the wires and insulation had detoriated and were in pieces. I rewired the entire system including soldering new leads to the points. Hooked everything back up but still no fire to the plugs. Also tried an ignition of an older model with just straight points and condenser still no fire. Can someone tell me how to test the coils and condenser on this unit, also is there a way to check the mounting plate for continuity, I have been told that some of these unit break internally. Also if someone has a wiring legend it would help to make sure I have the wires in the right place. Please help if anyone knows the answers I have had a hard time getting any information out of the dealers they seem to just want to sell new engines. Also have tried to get the prop off this same engine and can not get it to budge anyone have any ideas short of a big sledge.
