9.8 alternator

I have a Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke outboard engine. It has an alternator kit installed.

But the alternator has no voltage regulator, so when at low idle the voltage drops significantly.

I want to power 12 volt nav lights and a small 12 volt fish finder with this. I'm looking for info on what will work to regulate the voltage to 12 volts. It was suggested I buy a small 12 volt battery that will provide the 12 volts when the alternator isn't putting out the 12 volts. Suggestions on how small a battery will work for this? I don't want to have to hook up to a battery charger all the time. The 9.8 will get run at high RPMs fairly often, which should provide a charge to the battery.

Any other solutions to get 12 volts out of the outboard?

Thanks

Re: 9.8 alternator

You need a battery to act as a volatage regulator. That's the correct and only solution.

You will want a deep cycle battery. the standard Group-24 unit should work fine. If you select a smaller, say motorcycle-type battery, it may not last more than a season. OTOH, you could get a small AGM deep cycle battery, such as is commonly used in a bank on scooters.

Buy a small 12 volt storage battery.

There is no FREE Lunch and Ohm's law is still in effect :)>
