My 8 year-old 9.8 Tohatsu 2-stroke failed me for the first time yesterday coming back from my mooring in 40-45 knots in Salem Harbor, MA. Not fun to be out in those conditions. Thought I'd end up in Gloucester.
The engine stopped suddenly. Engine would fire and stall out. After repeated attempts I got it going again but it would not idle. It would only start and run at half throttle or more -- as if it was starved for fuel.
Of course I checked the tank vent, in-line filter. No joy. Dirty carb?
