hey guys,
i have a 72 sportwin 9.5 HP.
smokes like crazy out of what i would assume the base gasket.
i cant keep the cover on it or it will smoke its self out which is a hinderance since i use it on my floating barge, it gets very noisy.
so i am here to ask if anyone has worked on one of these pot belly motors?
i noticed i cant really get at the power head bolts and i dont have a manual, so do i need to split the whole casing to get at the base gasket? or is there a way to get to the bolts?

thanks guys.

smokes and smothers out on the barge? If mounted for tuning on the edge of a barrel, powerhead is way down in the exhaust -- might be a temporary issue.

Hey, thanks for the reply. My barge is quite large so I don't believe it's an exhaust too low type.
The exhaust is located out the bottom of the motor correct?
I will try and attach a picture of the barge

Yes , you have to split and remove the 2 side cowlings.--------Not impossible but frustrating if doing this for the first time.----Pictures and freezer bags for nuts and bolts are in order for you.

There are several ways that exhaust smoke commonly enters the hood on those motors. Powerhead gasket would be the last thing to suspect. Do a search here and save us some typing. If you don't find what you need, come back and we will spell it out for you. To answer your direct question, yes the motor has to be shucked out of the shell to remove the powerhead. A very intimidating job for a novice.

thanks Racerone, that unfortunate that i have to go through all that work but it has to be done.
i actually cut a hole right over the intake of the carb and fitted a piece of bilge hose to it to make a breather so i can run with the cover on.
i took the motor down to my boat mechanic and he said it was the base gasket so thats what im going off of.
thanks for the help guys.

Not to argue with your mechanic, but the easiest thing to check is the seal on top of the water pump housing. If the last guy working on the pump left it out, it will fill the hood with smoke, big time.

If it isn't that, then the next most likely thing is the bellows seal on the shift rod. Very flimsy part that splits open and that will also fill the hood with smoke big time. Split the case time for that.

#78 is shift rod seal (midsection view). #6 & 7 is seal and washer on top of pump housing (gearcase view)
