9.5 power problem

i just rebuilt the carb and fuel pump on my 9.5, it idles fine but when i run it with the cowl on it seems to starve for air at full throttle as soon as i take the cowl off it runs fine. thanks for any help.

these motors are notorious for having an exhaust leak from a poorly designed seal. The seal is a pain in the arse to get to because I believe you have to pull the block?!?! someone correct me if im wrong, but thats what happens, exhause fumes choke out the engine with the cowling on and they are easily done away with when the cowing is off.

that is almost always the case with a the 9.5 motors.

Yes, running ok with the cover off is a dead giveaway that it is breathing it's own exhaust smoke, a very common problem with the 9.5. There are several reasons that it can happen. One common reason, and the easiest to fix, is the seal on top of the water pump housing may have been left out last time it was serviced. At least it is worth taking a look to see if it is there. My bet is that it is missing.

Hold on, look to see if you need the seal first. They are no longer available from BRP, and fairly hard to find. Save them for the guy that actually needs one. It is two pieces, the seal and a reinforcement washer.
