I recently purchased/ traded my johnson 6hp for a johnson 9.5hp . The 9.5 runs fine except for a slight hitch at low speed. I decided to replace the spark plugs and the shop told me the plugs that were in it may not be the right plug (Champion J8). Does anyone know the proper plug for this motor?

Thanks in advance

Re: 9.5 Johnson

The NGK book calls for a B6S, which crosses to a Champion J8C. They only list the 9.5 being made from 1952 to 1973 so if your motor fits in this catagory the above plugs should be correct.

Re: 9.5 Johnson

Thank you for the help, I also had response on the rec.boat newsgroup that confirmed the J8 now in it is too hot and suggested that J6C would be the correct plug, the paint on the ends of the cylinders is blackened which from my limited knowledge indicates the motor is running too hot.
Is it reasonable to assume the J8 and the J8C would run at similar temperature, and would the J6C be cooler or am I way off base.

The J6C would be a colder plug and it wouldn't hurt to try it. If it runs ok stick with it, if it loads up and fouls you may need to run the J8Cs.
****

When on high speed adjust it down
until it start to slow down then turn it about
1/8 to 1/4 of a turn that should set it
right.
REX ;)

Re: 9.5 Johnson

Rex, Sorry you lost me, you say "When on high speed adjust it down" what is "it" the throttle, Lean/Rich adjustment, choke?
The choke seems to operate fine, it has what I was told are 2 slow speed adjustment the Laen/ Rich knob on the front of the motor (which is labeled) and another knob at the base (on the side) of the tiller handle. The lean/rich adjustment I understand but this knob on the side of the tiller arm I'm not so sure about. Any ideas??

Thanks for all your help
Phil

One is high speed and the other low speed.
All i was saying if at idle turn
the low speed down and it will die.
Then turn it back about 1/4 of a turn
that well get you close. The same go's
for the high speed jet.
P.S. write back REX
GOOD LUCK

Re: 9.5 Johnson

The knob on your tiller adjusts only idle speed. The knob on the front of your engine adjusts only idle mixture. You do not have a high speed mixture adjustment. The fact that you have discolored paint in the area you described indicates that this motor has been severely overheated at some point in it,s career.A compression test is in order.
