9.5 johnson seahorse cooling question

I have a 9.5 johnson seahorse that I'm guessing is a 1968 model. MQ-14E is the model no. My question is do these engines produce a straight steady stream of water out the pee hole or do they just sort of sputter and spray? I checked the impeller and that looks good and blew air threw the copper intake hole in the lower unit and also threw the pee hole into the cooling jackets. With the engine running the water coming out the pee hole is luke warm. After a couple minutes of running I shut it down and feel the cylinder heads and they are pretty hot to the touch - about 5 to 10 seconds before i take my hand off. Just wondering if this is normal for these engines cuz I don't want to burn it up, just fish!! Thanks

Only a couple of minutes and the motor is hot? After 2 minutes it should not get that warm I wouldn't think.

I have a 70 model 9.5hp Evinrude and I don't recall it spaying a steady stream, it did just sputter water.

If you can hold your hand on the motor for 5 to 10 seconds then you might be alright, but once again 2 minutes isn't very long.

What oil to fuel ratio are you using?

That all sounds pretty normal to me.

If you can hold your hand on the block for a three count it's just fine. The fact that you've got a good spray/sputter out the exhaust port and the water is lukewarm is good too.

Go fishing already.

The water is supposed to blow out the relief hole is big droplets, and if it does at slow idle, the pump is working OK. If you have to rev it up a bit to get it to spray, the pump is worn.

I am mixing 50:1 fuel mixture. The engine has sat for a few years and my dad just gave it to me recently so I gave it a tune up and it started right up on the second pull! Sounds like Im good to go, thanks alot for the info. This is a great forum. Peace!!

Then it needs a new water pump impeller. Absolutely no question, whether it looks good or not. You cannot seiously have gone to the trouble of dropping the gearcase etc and then put the old impeller back in!

On the Engine FAQs board you will find instructions for fitting a telltale to earlier engines that do not have one. Maybe that's something you would like to consider.

It is a 1968 and 50:1 is correct
