I just bought a 9.5 Johnson model #MQ12A with serial J2701139. The boat did not come with a gas tank. I was wondering whether someone out there knows if this motor requires a double or single hose gas tank. Also does anyone know the year of this motor?

Hi John. Your engine is probably a '66. MQ10 was '64, but that is as far as my chart goes.

I am almost certain that is a single-hose engine. If it has a fuel pump between the connector and the carb it is a single hose engine. You don't have to spend the big bux at OMC dealer. Get a Wal-Mart 6 gal. plastic and an OMC-style connector and hose.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Excellent advice J.B. I'm in agreement with you on all counts... Although I don't know the exact year of Johno's Johnny...I believe it was mfg'd after '64.

My dad owned a 1963 5 hp Gale (OMC) and it was a single hose tank. That same set up will work on my 1994 15 hp Johnson. I'm sure Johno's Johnny is the same.

Walt

johno: J.B. is 100% correct, you've got a 1966 model. I've got a '65 Evinrude 9.5 - those motors definitely use a single-hose fuel system.

Start scrounging parts for it, such as carburetor overhaul kits, gasket sets, and especially water pump impellers. Those are fine little engines, but the parts will become harder to find. Check out eBay for owner's manuals and parts and service manuals for the '64 - '73 Johnson and Evinrude 9.5, I see those there regularly. There seem to be more Evinrude examples than Johnson, but they're the same machines under the paint.

Hope this helps,

BSL
