I would like to what the oil mixure would be for a 9.5 johnson motor is. I dont know what year it is, I was hoping that it would be the same for all 9.5 HP johnsons.

Hi Bill,
It is 50-1 use a top grade engine manufactures oil. your motor will have cleaner pistons ect. Run a can of power tune or engine cleaner through it once a year if
you use it a lot,it will troll better.
...good fishing...corm

Re: 9.5 johnson oil mixure

I recently purchased/ traded my johnson 6hp for a johnson 9.5hp I was told 50:1 as well.

The 9.5 i have runs fine except for a slight hitch at low speed. I decided to replace the spark plugs and the shop told me the plugs that were in it may not be the right plug (Champion J8). Does anyone know the proper plug for this motor?

Thanks in advance

Howdy, Captain. The J8 series sounds a little hot to me, but may have been selected by a previous owner to deal with plug fouling at low rpm. You can try a J4J and watch out for fouling, but I would expect with 50:1 mix of top grade oil you will get better performance, particularly at top end.

If the J4J fouls, or if you do a lot of low speed work. . .trolling and the like... try a J6. If that fouls, go back to the J8.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

I've have several answers and as with your response the J6C seems to be the most reccomended. Most warn the J8 will be too hot and cause damage so I'm going to stay away from it.

I appreciate your help, Thanks
