8hp yamaha

I have a 15' Gheenoe that is rated for a 10hp motor, short shaft. It is very difficult to find a used one with a short shaft. I have found a 2001 8hp 4 stroke Yamaha short shaft with manual start. Does anyone have any opinion about the difference in the speed of a 10hp compared to an 8hp. Also, how difficult and expensive will it be to convert the 8hp to electric start. At 70 yrs old it's easier to push a button than pull a cord! Any info or advice will be greatly appreciated.

That 8HP should push your Gheenoe just fine....should be fairly easy to pull start if motor is tuned correctly and you have your starting procedure down pat.. I doubt the addition of electric start would be financially$$$$ viable....if at all possible.....

I just found a suzuki 9.9 short shaft which is $200 more than the Yamaha. Any idea how much faster it will push it or is it worth the price difference. Where I will be using it requires a long run and the faster the better. I've heard that a 2 stroke is faster than a 4 stroke for the same horsepower. Thanks

If distance and speed is a key factor then the larger motor would be best....and the 2 stroke may be several pounds lighter than the 4 stroke hanging on the transom....probably plane quicker/easier....
