I've a 1973 8hp Yamaha and need to remove the lower unit. I Removed the 4 bolts just above the cavitation plate joining the gear casing to the leg, loosened the upper/lower shift rod linkage, removed the propellor, propellor shaft and whichever gear is nearest the propellor, removed the circlip at the end of the driveshaft. All that remains in the gearcasing is a gear (forward or reverse I dont know which)and the pinion gear at the end of the drive shaft. The gearcase will only move about 2-3 mm away from the leg and will spring back up if I let it go. Could someone please tell me what else I need to undo. I'm trying to access the impeller by dropping the lower unit. Do I need to undo the bolts joining the leg to the powerhead casing and pull the powerhead up? Is there somewhere up in the powerhead where the water tube needs to be separated before the lower unit will drop?
thanks

You have not removed the shift lever that is located under the carbs. Two bolts holding on the shifter (in nutral) then push it out.

If you did not learn anything today, you should have stayed in bed.

:)

Hi Thom,

I've already separated the shift rod linkage about 1/4 ways down the leg. Would this not suffice as I have separated the linkage above where I want to separate the casings?
