I’m getting a friends 8HP Tohatsu 2003 four stroke ready for the season and need some advise on what to do because this is my first 4 stroke experience. I’ve worked on plenty of 2 cycles but there are no Tohatsu dealers close by here so he wants me to get it ready. What do I need to do special? The motor uses 5W-10 oil in the crankcase right? Can I use regular car oil? Anything special about the lower end lube? Do I have to use the Tohatsu stuff or is generic okay? I plan to change the plugs, fuel filter, anode and lube the normal places, anything else special or something I missed about this engine? Thanks

The Tohatsu 8 four-stroke was not available until the 2004 model year. The correct oil to use is 10W-30 and automotive is fine. The gear oil is EP90 which is the industry standard. Anything else is done only if it is worn or suspect.

You right on the year, it was manufactured in 2003 but called a 2004.

What is the oil crankcase capacity on this engine? Looks like it drains out below power head about 8 inches down on the shaft, is this the plug to drain oil?

sounds like you need a manual.

internetoutboards.com has them specifically for your motor, im not too sure if iboats.com is cool enough to have something like that.....

Hey, if this motor has an oil filter, I must be blind! Where is it?

You're not blind. :) There isn't an oil filter.

myoutboards is right in that having the OEM service manual is worthwhile, if for no other reason that it shows you the recommended periodic inspection intervals and how to perform the normal maintenance and inspection items - including the recommended way to change the engine oil.

I work on all kinds of outboards and it seems never the same Manf/model/year twice, I can't be buying manuals for every one, that's why I count on this web site for your support, thanks.

Most people keep their outboards for several years, therefore, for most folks the service manual is a worthwhile investment. Although these boards are great, on occasion there is misinformation- AND for the $20-$25 that it will cost you from Tohatsu, you will never have to wait for an answer. INTERNETOUTBOARDS will be able to get you one. Many of us here take advantage of his services not only as a knowledge resource, but as a vendor as well.

Oh, I agree as I bought a service manual for my 1988 Yamaha 130 I just bought and will keep for a while, but I also work on other peoples motors on the side, this is my first 4 stroke.
