8hp pull starter

Sorry, but I did a search but couldn't find what I was looking for. I was asked to look at a friends 8hp 2 stroke. For a while, pulling the starter cord didn't turn over the engine. I had no tools to take the flywheel cover off, but it cured itself. He doesn't want to row back the next time! Any ideas?

on most recoils there are tines that engages the flywheel when the rope is pulled. these get dirty and cruddy. sometimes a good rap on the recoil work to free them up. then take some WD40 with the straw and spray up the recoil. this should free you the tines.
