8hp Nissan ????? Help

Hello well I just got a 8hp Nissan and am wondering what to do before I take it out.

I belive its a 90's model, I got it from a friend. What maintenance should I do before trying to start, or should I take it to the shop.

Also is it ok to lay these on their side?

The Nissan engines are great little outboards. Not knowing how well it had been taken care of I, personally would invest a few dollars to have it properly serviced and tuned.

If you are not mechanically inclined, better take it to a dealer to make a total pro maintenance. If it's a 2 stroke can be layed down to any side, not if being a 4 strokes though.

Change the fluids and try it out. It would be pointless to run it to a dealer since you already took possession of it. The time to do that was before you got it...Point is that if the engine runs great you really don't need a dealer to spend your money to tell you that.

Thanx, Tohatsu I got it for free so no money loss, its a pull start and I have no experience with those. I just don't want to do anything to mess.

I'd change, or at least inspect, the water pump impeller. If it is dry and cracked, maybe it could do more damage by sending bits of rubber into the engine.

Agree. Remove spark plugs and clean them up. Change and inspect LU oil. Remove gear case and change impeller or pump kit. Look at LU seals while its off. After that, mount her to the stand, hook her up to the hose, and see what she does.
