have a 3 year old nissan 8hp 4 stroke when u pull the start cord ,won't pull, looked at the recoil on top of starter assembly,there is a tang that should be up when in netural,but its not seems like a simple adjustment,if you lift this tang up u can pull the cord.thanks

paul, yes that is the problem,but how to adjust,i'm sure its a easy fix,the motor is still under warrenty,but would rather do it myself,and not tie up my motor.thanks Joe

That's why you have a warranty. Shouldn't take your dealer long at all.

But if you want to make the adjustment yourself, it's done the same way one adjusts cable-operated bicycle brakes. You need the shifter in neutral, and the starter lock up at the same time. You can adjust the brass locknuts on the end of the cable to change the length so that the adjustment is where you want it. But seldom does it get out of adjustment. Most people just wiggle the lever, as Elvin mentioned.

To be more exact, when shifting, it is possible to shift into neutral, but not to move the shift lever far enough to activate the release on the safety switch. Wiggling the shift lever will move the rod enough to get it the right spot. It's not usually a problem with the adjustment, rather its a problem with the person shifting the engine just out of gear rather than into neutral. Sounds the same, but has a different result:)
