Initial symptoms include loss of power while at WOT, with a marked drop in tone. The boat didn't loose plane and I didn't notice a marked loss of speed however. I remember the RPMs were lower, but not by a lot. When I went to idle, then back to WOT a short while later, the boat wouldn't even get up on plane. Ran it under those conditions for about 20 minutes hoping to burn or blow something out, but didn't.

Since that first episode I have replaced the gas, oil, fuel filter, and spark plugs.

I've had the local Yamaha repair guy (very new, I was his first Yammie after factory school :-() look at this several times. He says he's done all the regular tests. Before we could both get out on the water with it winter came. He can't reproduce it in the tank, even after running for 20 minutes or so. He said it was awesome, the boat was pushing the tracker through the gravel (the tank is a pit with a ramp) That's when it runs :-(

The symptoms now are still a marked drop in tone of the motor and power loss. Last time I took it out, just after picking it up from the shop, it ran great for about 30 minutes at WOT with a couple of returns to idle and idle in gear. After about 30-40 minutes, returning to WOT from idle resulted in a marked loss of power and lower engine tone.

We were going to take it out, but as I said winter set in. I'd like to find out what this is. I assume I'm loosing one or more cylinders after it warms up. Sounds like, from other posts, bad coils, but he check those.

Any and all ideas on what this could be would be most welcome. I'm going to go back to the shop with the same person, but I want to give him some hard ideas on where to look.

Next steps are to get him to witness the problem on the water, and he says he'll call Yamaha and get factory support if we can't find it.

Thanks!
Brian ATkins

Hmmm. Hi, Batkins.

I think you are losing a cylinder to a heat failure in the ignition system. When it cools off it may work until it gets hot again.

Have the wrench (or yourself) heat up various parts of the ignition system with a hair dryer while under load. See if that causes the power drop. If it does, start disabling spark plugs until you find one that doesn't drop the rpm when disabled.

Then troubleshoot to find the bad component.

Good luck. :)
