89 OMC 3L Popping coming from carb @ mid throttle. Sounds like from carb.

Hello,

Randomly started popping when I took it out. Only idled for about 5-8 minutes, so I'm thinking it still wasn't warmed up. Ran fine at low speeds (about 20 min) and it continued when when I tried to give it throttle when warm.

Before the issue started, I took the flame arrestor off, and cleaned it because it was all gunked up and not idling.

It is a consistent popping noise at mid to high throttle, and I do not get any more power than I do at low throttle (just over no-wake speeds). I did not try WOT because I didn't want to risk doing any damage.

Backfiring out of the carb is usually 1 of 3 things. Out of spec timing, it idles OK so I don't think thats it. Lean mixture in carb or a burn't intake valve. Run a compression test.

agree with Daviet, but also if that doesn't work check rockers and or cam for a worn off lobe
