89 OMC 3.0 cobra no forward

I put the boat in the water today found that reverse works good but it doesnt go in forward took the engine cover off and had a buddy shift seems the shift linkage doesnt go all the way back when you push top part of linkage you can put it in forward manually but not with shifter figure the cable needs some sort of adjustment but not sure how tried adjusting cable on bracket but no luck anyone have any ideas?

Hope this helps but if it doesn't work you might need a new lower cable.

Sounds like your cable sheath broke, thats what happened to mine exactly, tilt the motor up and have a look behind on the starboard side, where it goes into the lower unit is where it's busted, cable is probably ok but the outer sheath breaks right there rendering the exact symptom you have, go check it out, watch while your buddy moves the gearshift lever.
