89 Mercury 25 HP 2 stroke Electric start and Teleflex Tach, pole setting.

I have an 89 25 hp 2 stroke electric start and am trying to hook up a teleflex tach to it. Below is some info on the tach: TELEFLEX MARINE TACHOMETER 0- 60 X 100 RPM 6000 RPM MAX
TELEFLEX PART NUMBER: 7514879 is interchangable with TELEFLEX 54304
WILL WORK ON INBOARD I/O AND OUTBOARD MOTORS. HAS SELECTOR FOR 4, 6, 10, 12 POLE
O/B ALTERNATOR , IGNITION

I found the info on which wires to use from the tach harness (Purple, black and grey) but would like to know what the proper pole setting for this motor would be. Could having it set to the wrong setting damage the tach in any way?

If the motor is U.S. origin them it has 8 poles. If not it has 12 poles.
