I have a Mercruiser 3.0L/130hp in/outboard that I am having troble with! Tried to start, motor turns over but no spark. Changed coil and still no spark. Don't know where to go from here. I did notice that the wires on the trim position sender are a little frayed. Could this be a cause of the problem? The trim is working. Is there a safety switch and where would I find it? I have a book with diagrams, but not quite sure where things are located. ANY HELP would be appreciated !!!
Thanks, BayouBabe

With key on, check for power on one side (+)of the ignition coil. If not, check fuses and feeds from ignition switch. Pop the distributor cap off and check points for gap. They should open about .020 when resting on the highest portion of the cam. The condenser can also be bad.

***Have you checked for spark directly from the coil?
The rotor, cap, and coil-wire can all prevent spark to the plugs as well.....

Babe, if the boat doesnt start after a long time in storage, the most likely culprit is corroded contacts on the ignition points, under the distributor cap....with the key off, pull off the cap, pull on the movable points contact to open it up alittle and stick your trusty nail file in between the contacts and file away....after a dozen strokes, stick the edge of a dollar bill in between the contacts and slowly draw it through, to remove the grit and debris.....stick the cap back on an give it a try...if you get it running, plan on replaceing the points soon.....

Couple of other things.... Check the shift interrupter switch..(Unplug it and see if she starts)

Also disconnect the tach wire at the coil..Bad tachs can keep her from starting also.

Number 18 is the shift interrupter switch.
