I had to remove my lower unit 3 times to fix my water pump (bought a crappy 3rd party pump. ended up buying a Johnson and that fixed it. had to remove starter and disconnect some wires to get to shift linkage) and when I reinstalled everything she ran well. Til I cut her off. Then she was dead. Fortunately I had a jump box and she got me back home. After some investigation and reflection, I realized I had put an extra wire on the ground post. I looked and ended up removing a green wire off, charged battery and she ran great again. Til I shut her off. And had no jump box this time. Thank goodness for good neighbors! I checked again today and saw that the green (possibly another color but appears to be green) had overheated and melted a lot of the cover off the wire. It''s a green wire that seems to come out of the same bundle as the black and white that go to a round plug and the ground post. It has a ring terminal on it. I cant figure out where that green wire goes, and have charged the battery (possibly not enough) and tried to crank her but the starter just spun the gear and didnt engage which I expect is low amperage.
Any suggestions on where that wire goes?

You pull a hitch pin.----Push on a lever and the shift is disconnected.----There are no wires in the way.----There are no wires to deal with when changing a water pump impeller !!

On this one you have to remove a bolt that clamps on to the shift rod. It is very difficult to get to and the wires are in the way.

If your motor is an 89 model you have to ---LOOK / LISTEN / LEARN ----to do do it the easy way !!

Even if there is a pin somewhere, your “advice” doesn’t help at all. Why argue with people who are seeking help and instead tell them to listen to you not give advice.
thanks for nothing.

Sorry , but the 89 models have a hitch pin on the starboard side.----You remove that pin .---Push that lever to the port side and shift rod is released.-----Takes but seconds to do.-----You need to do the 3 L method.----LOOK / LISTEN / LEARN !!-----You are the one arguing with years of experience !

The 3 wires have to do with a trim sending unit and trim gauge.-----Have worked on 4 motors like yours in the last month or so.----Took just seconds to disconnect the shift rods !!

finally you give some actual advice. Thanks but your arrogance pushed me to figure it out for myself. Green is tilt down. You knew that and yet chose to shout at me to LLL but didnt give anything worth LLL to. I researched this for quite a while before attempting it. Every video I watched said to do what I did. Even the service manual didnt say anything about the pin. Either way, I got my problem fixed and will now leave this site as I didnt sign up to get berated by someone who only offers chastisement, not solutions.

Good luck with your motor.-------Ask questions before you turn the wrench.--------Yes in the wiring harness green ( grass ) is down.----Blue ( sky ) is up.----But there are also a green, black and a white wire for the tilt indicator.-----You are not watching the right videos either !!----Are you sure your motor is an 89 ?----All 89 models have a hitch pin to remove for the shift rod.----Model # of your motor ?
