While still troubleshooting my PTT today I pulled apart a red boot that had a retaining wire on it. It was located next to what appeared to be the main wiring harness plug (male/female). When I got it open I found a tiny 32v 20a fuse that was burned. I've never seen a glass fuse this small. It was normal diameter but only about 1/4" long. Everything except the PTT (which works down always and up sometimes even after new relays and a new switch...and I can hear the relay click when I go UP) and my Tach doesnt work but everything else seems fine.
Any ideas what this is and where to get more?

Can't speak to why the fuse is there on your engine, but my 71' 50hp has the same little fuse...
I found some at my local hardware store.. Could also order them online..

I've been considering replacing the boot with a blade style fuse holder, but haven't decided on that nor done it yet..
Pretty easy so far to find the fuses in my local stores...

For what it's worth..

The fuse controls the main electrical on the motor when it burns up the motor will not start, It will stop the starter from turning and it's a 12 volt fuse. As far as the tach not working try a different tach or test the rectifier on the side of the motor. Any auto parts store or hardware store will have them most of the time they burn up because people cross the + and - cables on the battery. As for your PTT I would look at the switch.

Thanks I hope I can find the fuse and also wonder why it was burnt as I always disconnect the battery before doing anything.
The tach is stuck at about 4,000 so I suspect that's the problem as I would think at rest it would naturally go to 0.
I have replaced the PTT switch as the old OMC one didnt have continuity and I can hear the relay (also new) click when I hit the Up switch. The Down always works so since it's intermittent I figured it was a poor electrical connection somewhere. The PTT switch on the motor housing doesnt work at all so I pulled it off and verified that it has no continuity either up or down. That's an easy fix though.

So just out of curiosity I put the bad fuse back in, cranked and drove my boat. Totally stumped.

Thats because the fuse is not bad. Take the fuse out and see what happens.

I can't remember for sure but I think some harnesses had a spot for a spare fuse
