I just bought a 1989 20ft Lowe pontoon boat with the above motor. The boat and motor are in nearly new condition. I checked the compression (good) and ran the rig about ten hours before I bought it and probably another ten after I wrote the check. I have some questions I hope you guys can help me with. I also put an impeller in it and changed the gear oil although it looked good.

1. I have heard of problems with the VRO systems. It seems to work perfect now. All of the alarms are hooked up and I checked them to be sure they worked. Would you cap the system and mix oil or leave it alone?

2. The prop was in excellent condition. The rig runs at 4800 RPM at WOT. Is this what you would expect?

3. The boat will be used mostly for trolling for white bass and walleye. In the water and in neutral the motor runs at at 1000 RPM and it trolls at about 900 RPM. Is that about right?

Thanks in advance. I appreciate you guys

I think you are a little over propped for that rig. A pontoon is a heavy push and your motor needs to be a little more free. Shoot for 5000-5500 range.

OK I'll get the numbers off of the prop and see what you guys think I should go to

Does anyone have any comment on the VRO question?

There are thousands of 1989 motors still running with the Oil pumps functioning, and there are thousands running on pre-mix with the oil pumps disabled. Whatever you are comfortable with.

Thanks Walker,

Are the warning horns reliable? The newest motor I have ever had was 1975 and I guess the VRO thing just makes me nervous. If the alarms will truly let me know that the pump is not oiling, then I'll probably leave it alone.
