89 Johnson 40HP suggestions

I have some Brand new 89 40HP Johnsons and need to know what needs to be done to use the engines. They have never been out of the crate. Any sugestions on what to replace and if the present new controls will work ( Do they make an adapter for the old wiring harness). I only have the engines.

Are you saying they are new -- as in never been started?

Three of the top 6 or 7 pros on these boards answered the thread, but none answered your controls question. You have them all drooling at the thought of crated new 1989 engines.

Yes....alden is right...<br /><br />Any pre 96' control and harness will fit. Make sure the harness has the large red plug on it.<br /><br />96' to date controls will need an adaptor harness to mate up to the engine.<br /><br />You can drop in at any local John/Rude dealer and they can help.<br /><br />Can I go back to drooling now....

Nothing sticks out in my mind Andy. If these engines are equipped with the VRO pumps, I think I would update to the current OMS pump. Setting so long may have made the rupper diaphrams dry and brittle.

Good point OBJ.<br /><br />Speaking of which, anything rubber might be dry rotted by now. Might be worth replacing the impeller.

Yep...would be a great idea Andy. Also check the fuel lines around the carbs. Time does funny things to rubber.

They are brand new still in the crates I received copies of all serial numbers today and they are 55 HP engines (40 units) 1989 and 1990 model year 89's are short shaft and 1990's are long shafts.

40 UNITS????? Where did you find that many engines at? Anybody wanna' go to Virginia Beach???? *slurp slobber*<br /><br />I see only a J55RWLE model in 89'. These all commercial engines?

Was it some kind of military surplus auction?<br /><br /><br />Off topic, but I used to live in Norfolk. I worked at the VA beach Pep Boys while I waited for the wife to finish her enlistment. I lived on Cheasapeake Blvd. off Oceanview.
