Would it hurt anything to spray carb cleaner into the carbs while the engine is running? I bought this 88 bayliner and the guy last had it running about 2 years ago. Still had a half tank of gas in it. Filled with more fuel. wouldn't run well in the water. idles good but will only run up to about 20mph. sounds like gas not getting to motor. it runs better if press the choke button. Bad gas still? Carbs? Can i take the carbs off and clean them without a kit of some kind? thanks.

Yes it sounds like you have a dirty carb situation.

No, don't use a spray carb cleaner in your motor.
It won't get into the jets or bowl, which is what needs cleaning. And may actually harm your motor, as it has no lubricant. Same goes for starting fluid.

Yes you can get a carb rebuild kit for a few $.

It wouldn't hurt to get rid of the old gas, and flush any sediment out of the tank.

You should probably do a an engine decarb also. This removes carbon from the cylinder head and piston rings, which will provide more compression and a better burn of the fuel.

Ckick here for Info on doing a decarb:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000016

Clean your screen in the fuel pump (round thing with a screw in the middle). You can spray the bejeezzes out of the carbs and let it sit. Let it dry then you can start it. Only pull the float bowls if you have new gaskets though.....and that old gas should have been drained. If old gas HAS NOT BEEN "Stabiled", after 6 months its junk.
