It can be one of two types of connections. You either have to pull a hitch pin out of the horizontal linkage on the motor and shove the linkage to the port side of the motor or there is a 3/8head bolt thru the linkage connection that is accessable from the port side. It is under the bottom carb. Much easier job, especially for a first timers if you pull the bottom carb off and then you can see it easier.

Re: 89 evinrude water pump

I just did one for the 1st time on my '91 Evinrude 115. Here is what I learned. Mine has the shift linkage that moves to the port side after removing the pin. Once the shift rod is free, remove all of the bolts on the cavitation plate per the manual. Don't forget the ones under the trim tab. The lower unit is heavy so, hold on to it while removing the last two bolts. I did the ones on the aft first then the ones close to the stearn of the boat. Left (port)side last since I'm right handed so I could hold the lower unit with my right arm while I took the last bolt out. The unit slides right off. I tilted the motor almost to horizontal. Be careful not to bend the shift rod as you pull it out.

I made a holder for the lower unit out of a piece of plywood. A 3" wide notch 20" deep in my case in a piece of plywood that was 32" wide and 24" deep. I set the plywood on 4 cinder blocks, 2 on each side. This held the lower unit upright while I worked on the impeller.

I bought the entire kit with the housing for mine since it was the same price at marineengine.com as the one without the new housing. Sorry, Iboats they were cheaper.

If you don't have a manual I suggest getting one. OMC is best Seloc is not too bad. Follow the manual, remove and replace the water pump.

Couple of tricks....

Line the inside of the impeller cup with oil and put the impeller in the cup before putting it in the housing. This is the way the manual tells you to do it. I've seen other methods. This is the proper way.

Put the key on the drive shaft with a small blob of grease, like the manual says. Pull/Push the shift rod to put the lower unit in gear. Turn the prop to align the key on the drive shaft to match the impeller key-way. The impeller slides right on.

Push/Pull the shift rod to put it back to the position it was in when you pulled it off the motor.

Put dish soap on the water intake grommet so it will slide on the water intake tube the 1st time. I learned this the hard way. Mine went sideways twice before the soap.

Carefully slide it back on making sure to get the exhaust hookup in place and the water intake lined up. Critical! If you don't get the water intake right you'll be pullng the lower unit off again. I did this twice!

Put the bolts back in while holding with right arm until held by the bolts. I did it in the exact reverse order of how I took them out.

I'm sure there are other, maybe better methods. It took me a little over 2 hours for the entire job. That includes taking pictures and thinking through the procedure while I was doing it.

Now that I've done it, I will never pay someone $120 + parts to do it for me. It's really pretty simple. The best part is my boat was not at the shop for 10 days waiting on them to work on it and sitting out in the open with no protection.

Hope this helps.

Rather than remove the carb, remove the lower cowling. Also, lubricate the drive shaft splines before reinstalling the lower unit. Make sure the impeller vanes point to the rear as the drive shaft is rotated clockwise (viewed from the top).
