Nubey here, I am preparing to put carb kits in my '89 evinrude. Are there any tips, tricks, and or pitfalls I should be aware of?

The engine was rebuilt about 1990 and I bought it in 2004. It cranks right up and runs well, but I think the carbs are an issue. Not sure whether they really need tuning or a kit.

What are the needle valve setting(s)? I see where 2 1/2 turns out from seat seems to be the most common. Should I start there before jumping in to the carb kits?

Don't fix it if it ain't broke. Try adjustments first. Run fresh gas.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I believe I will run a little carb cleaner through the carbs, and adjust my linkage on the control box to the motor. While I am at it, I will check my shift linkage. That seems good to me, but it is an easy check there.

From what I could fine, and will look some more, most carb adjustments are done at idle. I was thinking I would have to have somebody driving the boat while adjusting the carbs. I found an article that was pretty straight forward. I am a big believer in if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Thanks for the advise. I will follow it.

ID, I found that video a few days ago. It is real good, very well explained. If I go the full route, I will definitely use it.

Do you know a video that explains setting the needle valves.

I don't know of a video explaining it but I believe a good starting point is to gently seat each needle and then turn them out 1.5 turns and start fine tuning from that point.

What other trouble shooting was done ?----Folks often pick on the carburetors first when an engine acts up, don't know why that is?

Do not run carburetor cleaner through a carburetor while the engine is running. That is not how it works.

Tie up to the dock with a few lines and put it in gear and tune the carbs that way.

Generally you gently seat and then back out 1 1/2 turns and set your idle roller on the scribe mark or just touching the arm

Set your idle at setting in gear (for my 75 you set it in reverse. Most I’ve done are in forward and normally 700ish - not sure on yours)

Turn out 1/8 turn at a time and wait a few seconds to see if the idle adjusts. Do that until it loads up (counting your turns). Then turn in until the idle starts to get high and you get a little lean cough. Setting is in between the 2.

then do the other the same way and then double check your idle again. Don’t lean out the screws to get your idle right.
