I have a 1989 Evinrude 50hp VRO. The problem that I am having is when it is idling and or at slow speeds it acts like it is back firing out of the intake. When I had the air cleaner cover off and ran it, it spits fuel out of the upper intake when it back fires. It will do this a couple of times then die, then start right back up. The carbs were just rebuilt. I do not know what the problem is and I really need help please.

If you have fuel spitting out of the carb, check your reed valves and see if there is something under a reed or a cracked or broken reed.

Sounds like an issue with the reeds. Pull the carbs, intake and inspect the reed blocks.

I have checked compression and all compression is great right on the money. How do I inspect the reeds is there a certain way that it needs to be done???

They are behind the intake, removal of the carbs and intake is the only "real" way. Compression has no bearing on reed performance (as far as readings are concerned, if you had bad compression the reeds would have a hard time functioning to begin with), reeds open to pull in the fuel/air, the piston rings compress the mix, hense "compression".

Ok im going to inspect them today more than likely. What am I looking for exactly (cracks, gaps ect....) And if the reeds are bad are they hard to replace and can they be replaced?

Piece of cake, you just buy the new "reed plate" as I call them , unscrew the old ones and screw in the new ones making sure everything is "square". The one with an issue could be bent or shifted and you may just need to realign it.

Ok so i removed them and I was having problems with fuel spitting out of the top carb. Come to find out 2 of the tounges on the top reed valve were bent open and decent amount. It seems like the problem???? If so do you know any place to get new ones for this motor online?

No problem, should be all fixed up once you get new ones installed.

Re: 89 Evinrude 50hp PROBLEMS HELP!!!!

A freind had a similar problem and brought it to me to fix, noticed several bolts were missing from the silencer btu it is an older 70s 50 so I didn't think much of it till I got to the reeds.

There were the missing bolts stuck in the reeds, 4 of them I think, very fortunate they didn't get sucked in, I made sure mine were tight as soon as I was done putting his back together.
