Hi Folks,
I have an 89 Evinrude long shaft 25HP outboard that struggles to push water. The impeller was replaced recently. The symptoms are a little funny so I'm looking for suggestions before I spend a bunch of $$....
When you first fire up the motor it pushes water just fine. In gear it seems to also push a good amount of water with enough RPM. When the motor is warmed up, the problems start to occur...
In gear, at idle speed, no water out the tell tail. Pick up the speed and the water starts to come out here and there. Put the motor in neutral and the water comes out for a bit but then starts to spit periodically.
Recently we were out on the ocean and the water stopped coming out at high speed. Exhaust would be coming out of the tell tail but no water. Bringing the motor back down to idle did nothing to get the water flowing again. We used the kicker to get home.
When we got home and flushed the salt water out of the motor, there is a perfect stream of water again!
A little bit of background... This motor has been used a lot in salt water. I have had the leg apart and and the water tube is all clear. The impeller was installed by a professional marine mechanic. The original nipple that the tell tail tube attaches to at the top of the exhaust housing was made out of plastic. Upon removal a small piece of the plastic did break off and fall back into the manifold. This fitting has been replaced with a metal one.
I don't know much about thermostats on Evinrude engines. It is evident that the thermostat housing on this motor has been opened up and something in there has been removed or replaced.
I am tempted to buy a whole new water pump kit, thermostat + gasket and exhaust manifold gasket. I would replace the thermostat, replace the entire water pump and open up the exhaust cover to remove that little piece of plastic.
Any other thoughts or advise?
Thanks very much!!
