I am interested in buying a boat with a 1989 Evinrude 175 horsepower outboard. The last time it was used the owner said he heard a metallic "clanking" sound and then it stopped running. Now it won't turn over. It seems like a good deal if I can get the motor rebuilt. BUT there is no way for me to tell the magnitude of what needs to be done to rebuild this power head. The lower end was rebuilt last year.
Can anyone give a best and worst case rebuild scenario
Todd - Vermont

Clanking? Maybe threw a rod. You'll probably have to tear it down to really see how bad it is. I wouldn't pay a cent more than the lower is worth, and assume the powerhead is a write-off. Maybe the owner would let you pull the heads to take a peek at the bores. But the guts of the motor will still be a mystery.
