MY 89 evinrude V6 150hp VRO(not vro anymore) seems have a cylinder dropping out from time to time. The boat runs rough but runs up 5000rpm+ I want to check my coils(6of them) and the ignition trigger to narrow it down. Can anyone tell me if there is a way of testing these parts with a volt/ohm meter.
Thanks, BB

Re: 89 Evinrude 150 V problem

Hello BB388, You need a peak reading volt meter or a peak reading attachment for your standard digital vom in order to read the pulsing output of the engine ignition system. http://www.esitest.com/cart/640.html
I recently had a similar problem with one cylinder not firing. You can narrow it down by swapping coils from left side to right side, then power packs. I finally found a broken wire on the timer base. The conductor was broken inside the unbroken insulation and would open up when the timer base rotated. This made the problem appear to be intermittent. Check that all your connections are clean. Hope this helps.

Make sure your carb screws are all tight too.

If the cylinder you're dropping is #6, check for moisture on the plug electrodes. Could be the lower main seal on the crankshaft. If so, it should drop that cylinder at low RPM's, but kick back in above 2500-3000, and run great from there.
