1989 OMC Cobra 5.7

My port side engine will sputter out and shut off, only at idle speed and while in gear (in water). It runs fine at any/all RPM above idle, but when I'm navigating back through the marina, is will just dies out after about 2-3 minutes at idle speed. I have NO excelleration problem or any trouble while underway. I have adjusted the idle speed, but does not make a difference. I replaced the ESA module, and even disconnected it to eiliminate that as a possibility.

I dont think its a fuel pump issue, because she fires right back up immediately after stalling - maybe a choke problem, but don't really know how to verify. (or if theres another possibility). Fuel is fresh. I did change the filter at the carb, but have not change the water seperator yet (thats next). I DID just install a new ESA module on that engine, and thats when it seemed to start happening. I did disconnect it to troubleshoot, but got the same results, so thats not the problem. I checked the timing and it's correct for marine fuel.

I just replaced the dist. cap/rotor/points/conds. and still have the same problem.

Suggestions?

You say it's your Port side motor,..???

Swap the Carbs,.....
If the Issue follows the Carb,....... It's got a Plugged Idle Circuit...........

I'm not firmiliar with the "Idle Circuit".. Is that fixable, or replaceable? If it turns out to be the problem ?

Thanks.

Ignore my last post.. I was thinking in the "Electrical" mode (circuit), not mechanical. I will check that today. Can I pull the mixture screws all the way out and blast them with carb cleaner ??

My 350 engine started cutting off at idle when warm. It restarted immediately and seemed to run fine at cruise. I found my fuel pressure about 2.5 PSI from my electric fuel pump, although it had a good flow. I replaced it and problem gone, pressure around 5.5 PSI. I guess the Q-jet carb needed more pressure to keep the float needle valve open.

I have a manual fuel pump. Seeing that it fires right up immediately, I dont think its the pump, otherwise I would expect it to take a little extra to get fuel back into the carb if it was starving enough to stall out. Your electric pump would feed faster, and be less noticable.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I think you were on the right path with the distributor. I would swap the coils. I have had a series of strange events that turned out to be a coil. Stalls as you are experiencing and overheating symptoms. THe coil was at the bottom of it all. Just a hunch and it's a quick swap.
