The low reading could well be the guage as you say the walls look OK. Try spraying pre-mixed fuel into the carb, and see if it will start.

done that and no good.. fuel is definetly getting through as the plugs get wet after doing that. tried new plugs, spark is great, have had head off and there is a fair bit of movement in the rings just by moving the piston sie to side with hand.?? any other ideas i would of expected the thing to fire but nothing.

Re: 89 8hp compression

Compression is not the problem.

Go to the Engine FAQs Forum, QSS. Do "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find.

You don't by chance have the plug wires turned around?

No plug leads are on fine, has plenty of spark 60lbs on both cylinders, bores look good sprayed fresh fuel/oil mix into carby still won,t start. unless its lean somewhere although i would of expexted it to still fire. anyone else have any ideas?

Re: 89 8hp compression

This is just my opinion: I think 60 lbs. isn't worth a flip. But I also suspect your spark is no good. Will it jump a 1/4 inch gap with a nice blue pop? just because you see spark doesn't mean it's good enough to work. I think that's the problem. And those gauges, as was said, are bad about being inaccurate on compression. If you spray a little premix into the spark plug holes and have good spark, it should at least momentarily crank unless your compression truly is 60lbs. ----Heck, I'd even suspect it would roll over a little with just 60lbs.
Good luck,
JBJ
