it starts if you prime each cylinder after the first time you prime and start it it starts right up every time and runs good you can kill and start it over and over after you prime it the first time unless you let it sit for a couple hours then you have to prime again . dirty carbs? dirty reeds ? is there a carb cleaner you can mix with the gas and run? and not hurt the reeds ?

Do you have an electric "choke" solenoid on that engine? Is it working? It is actuated by pushing the key in for 5 seconds before trying to start.

Does fuel line bulb stay pumped up firm?
Have you checked compression?
What do the sparkplugs look like?

Has it always been like this, or did it just start happening?

In addition to just adding a cleaner to the gas, you should do a decarb of the engine. It is reommended by the manufacturer.
***************************************
Decarbing is a 2 part process. The first part is preventative, done by using a fuel additive to prevent carbon build up. SeaFoam or Ring Free are such fuel additives and can be found at most auto parts stores. It also works as a fuel system cleaner and should be used as a preventative maintenance procedure.

If Your intent is REMOVE the existing carbon buildup from the cylinders, heads, and rings, a spray decarb solvent product, such as SeaFoam Deep Creep, is needed. Some people use one can per cylinder.

Run engine at fast idle, with engine running, slowly spray liberal amount into each carb, its gonna smoke up the place,
spray for a couple minutes, now spray a larger amount into carbs until engine chokes out and stops.

Remove spark plugs and spray decarb liberally into each cylinder, install the spark plugs, let it soak for 2 to 10 hours.

Start the engine and run at medium throttle, or if at the lake, run it at full throttle. It won't hurt to spray some more through the carbs. Run it for atleast 10 minutes to flush the crud out of your engine. Now remove and clean, or replace the spark plugs.

It works well to do the spraying, the night before you go to the lake. This way you can let it soak overnight, and really flush it out at the lake.

Don't do this in front of the garage door or the house, unless you want it coated with greasy crud.

the choke is working the engine shouldnt have any build up the it was rebuilt at the beginning of last season and only run about four trips to the lake it ran fine before sitting all winter plugs are new fresh gas i just figured the carbs are gummed up from sitting all winter ? but i didnt know if you could use a carb cleaner like chemtool or gumout on a two stroke while it was runnig without damaging it?

Tinman,

It sounds like the choke isn't closing all the way. I had the same problem on my 85HP Chrysler. When the choke butterflies were adjusted correctly, I didn't have to prime it anymore.

Having said that, it could very well be the carb if the choke is working properly. As a general rule, spraying a carb cleaner in the carb isn't going to accomplish what you need it to. Really the only way to clean it right is to disassemble the carbs. It really isn't that difficult if you have a manual.

Shane
