89 25 hp evinrude headgasket

do you have to pull the power unit to replace head gasket or can it be done with motor still together? I have been told that I have a leaking exhaust and maybe a leaking head gasket and would like to put new gaskets on,but if I have to pull whole power unit I will finish year with trolling motor and see about getting it fixed this winter.

Head gasket can be done w/o a powerhead removal.

Probably have to pull the powerhead to do the exhaust gaskets. But I'd have to look to be sure.

I pulled off head and exhaust cover. I did not have to remove powerhead.
I am going to clean up all of the parts and check to make sure the head is flat.
The thermosat doesn't look good. My gaskets come in tomorrow and I'll see if I can get it back together.
