89 200 Black Max Lower Unit/Shifter

Just got back from a week of vacation and wakeboarding with my ?89 200 Black Max. Last day pulling wakeboarding got a load mechanical snap and motor broke free like cavitation. Shifted to neutral and started up again. At 5000 RPM everything stopped?.I thought motor had seized. Shifted to neutral and started up moved off and 5000 RPM popped out of gear again. I am checking out shifter and adjustment etc. Any thoughts on damage to lower unit?
