I have a 1989 175 hp evinrude that has 30- lbs compression on the #1 cylinder. I have purchased a new head gasket and manual and want to attempt to replace head gasket but not sure which order to untorque and retighten the head bolts. The manual doesn't have any pictures and I don't understand what it is telling me. Does anyone have a diagram or pic??

The cylinder head screws need to be torqued to 18-20 ft lbs. The torque sequence requires that you start with the two screws in the middle (center) of the head and move outward in a circular fashion. [Tighten the top/bottom screws last.] Once the engine has gone through a couple of heat/cool cycles, I'd retorque the head screws again.

Do I take them out in the same order or do I start from the outside and work my way in??

You don't have to take them out in any order. What you are trying to do is to establish the correct torque (sequence) when it goes back together. I'd probably torque each screw to 10 lbs, then go back over at 15 lbs, then a final torque close to 20.
