Hey all, back again. Just aquired a bass boat from my father in law. It is an 89' bass tracker fiberglass 18 footer with a 110 evinrude on the back. He bought it brand new, but the boat has been sitting for 7 or 8 years without being cranked. I'd say the whole rig has less than 100 hours on it. I'm going down to pick it up in a couple of weeks and would like to know from all the OMC V-4 crossflow freaks out there what to do before I try to fire it up. I know I need to immediately jettison the VRO and mix my gas, but should I just try and fire it up? Thanks.

Re: 89' 110 Evinrude

i just bought a 89 stratos with a 110 v4 on it . it sat 2 yrs.(they said) I ended up taking the tank out and cleaning it . I also changed every hose in between the tank and motor. I installed new fuel filter and water seperator. a new pickup tube was also in order. it took a little bit of time , but it runs great now . The thing was , I did it all in steps. I should have done it all right away and I would have been on the water sooner !! By the way , buy a manual !!!hope this works ! Skip

busterb,

I like crossflows-true, but I'm not a freak.

I would not disconnect the VRO-I like them.

Here is what I would do.

1. Replace the impeller.
2. Drain and refill lower unit-with new drain and fill plug seals.
3. Remove the oil tank and clean it out.
4. Replace the filter sock in the VRO tank.
5. Refill with oil and prime. Mark a line on the tank so that you can verify oil useage.
6. Check all VRO hoses for integrity.
7. Check all fuel lines under the hood and going to the tank.
8. Drain the tank and refill with fresh pre-mix-50:1, add a water seperator/filter assembly.
9. Ground the tan wire on each head to make sure the "hot" warning horn is working.
10. Verify you get a "beep" whenever you turn the key on.
11. Check all electrical connections under the cowl-especially the negative battery ground on the block. Take it off and clean it.

Start it up and run it a while. Once you have a run it a while and it seems to be running good. Perform a decarb. procedure. Use the search feature on this board for instructions.

Change the plugs after decarb.

Oops! Forgot - I would pull the heads and change the 4 water deflectors and head gaskets.

Sorry!

Thanks a million guys! I'm sure once I do that the motor will give me many years of good service.

Dhadley- what stainless prop and pitch do you recommend for this boat that will get me a good combination of holeshot and top end? Also, how much different is a 110 crossflow vs. a 120 looper in the power department realistically? I've read threads about a 110 crossflow making about 120 at the prop. Is this true? Thanks!

Re: 89' 110 Evinrude

Although the crossflow is a great motor it will never make the torque of a looper. The 110 and 120 are totally different motors.

I too have no problem with the oil pump. Keep water out of the tank and you'll be good to go.

The best prop is one that allows 5800 RPM with an average load. If the boat has a jackplate I would definately lean toward a 4 blade. Get the motor up and running and we'll see where we're at with what you have. Then we can start changing things.

Keep us informed and good luck!

Thanks a million Dhadley. I'm looking foward to playing with this thing and getting it set up. I still have to go pick it up down in South Georgia which will be an all day trip there and back. I can't wait!
