Just wondering if I am overloading my outdrive.
I have a 1973 Jolly Roger speedboat with a 233 hp 351 ford with a 888 outdrive. I am running a 17 pitch prop that tops the boat out at approx 55. Will the outdrive ratio 1.5 vs 1.32 give me issues?

It depends. What's the rpm at top speed? At ~4400 you should be ok imho.

Ayuh,... You'll pretty much Have to prop it to the right rpms,...
The 1.32 gears are NLA...

That 1-32 is made for the big block motors. It would work.As far as performance goes,I have no idea.Change it out and see what you get.
Post your results and send me a PM with the results,in case I miss the after post.
Jasper Marine sells the 1.32 in a rebuilt upper. If you need to get it redone. Just thought I'd add that.J

There's no problem running the 888-drive with 1.50's instead of the 233 stock drive at 1.32. Just prop it correctly to keep your WOT's in check. (4400 may be a tad high, more like 4200 max)

Re: 888 233 mix

Thanks for the replies. She does top out at 4150 rpm, if I can believe the tach.
I still have the 233 outdrive from the original boat that I salvaged a 1977 searay240 that was damaged from a car accident. So if it does mess up I can change out in under a hour:D
one other question if i switched from 2 bbl to 4 bbl would it affect anything other than money going thru secondarys? Thanks again

Re: 888 233 mix

The 233 was a 2bbl carb which (you guessed it) 233HP. The 4bbl version was rated at 265HP I believe. It's worth it if you want the extra ponies, but don't expect much more than 1-2mph increase on the top end. You will obviously need a 4bbl intake manifold, so find a nice dual-plane intake from Edelbrock or similar.

If it's a Rochester quadra-jet with 7/8" primaries, you'll get slightly better efficiency at cruising speeds, more torque on acceleration. And you'll be well over 4150 at wot.
