My port engine recently got the milkshake in the oil syndrome! Engine was running well, although had a little spark-knock/pinging at speed under load.

Engine is fresh water cooled, run in salt water.

Question: Where should I look first for the problem, ie trouble shooting process?

I just finished re-assembling my 888. I would chek the risers first then the manifold gaskets.

Jasonnb,

I assume you are talking about the manifold to head gasket. Would this let water into the cylinders? I just did a top engine job on the starboard engine because of a blown head gasket caused by a poor instillation of the lower unit,(mecanic was a butcher) which caused the salt water p/up to fail. The engine ran hot and warped the head on one side. Needless to say I had to re-repair myself. Engine shop sold me a set of virgin (never been used in water before, set them up for marine and they worked great!)

Sorry, had a brain cramp. I don't think a leaky head-manifold gasket would cause your problem but I may be wrong. That would leave the Riser/manifold joint and Head gaskets as prime suspects. Also, I would check the Intake gasket. May be getting time to pull the heads and just re-seal everything from there up. Then you could be sure you gotthe problem.

as far as I know, the only way to get water into the crankcase other the pouring it into the filler pipe, is a cracked casting or a blown head gasket.........good luck

Dont we mechanics love those saltwater engines!!

Time to pressure check the manafolds and risers. If these are more than five years old and live in saltwater...REPLACE THEM NOW!! Very common!!
