The boat is hard to keep straight in the channels. the rear end seems to be going back and forth at Idle speed. I checked the play it the steering helmet and found "some" play. Not sure how much is too much. Not much holding it in place besides the helmet pin and the shaft going through the transum. When I remove the pin the helmet slides right out of the hole in the transum. Is there supposed to be more holding it in place? The sleeve that the pin goes through is threaded. Is this an adjustment or should it be tightened down in the helmet?

Thanks

What boat and what motor? Does it have trim tabs?
What was holding the helmet in place? Was it 2 bolts or a single pin what do you have holding the helmet to the drive.Old style has a single bolt newer has two bolts.
How about a pic of what you have.
Sometimes the bigger boats with tabs, you can run with the tabs all the way down and it will help.Post pics and we'll try to help more.Jerry

The boat is hard to keep straight in the channels.

At near idle speed, all planing hull boats with I/O's and a single prop wonder back and forth. Nature of the beast.

Its a 1988 20' bowrider with a 5.7 ltr / 275a outdrive w/power steering. AQ260B i think.

It has the two bolt pin. No trim tabs.

the helmet seemed to be sitting a bit low, I screwed out the sleeve that the pin sits in and it seemed to help support it up where it goes through the transum. The small rubber at the transum was not touching the hole but when I adjusted the sleeve at the pin it seems to hold it up better. Is this the fix or will I damage that sleeve? Sorry no good camera available.

Thanks,

Joe
