88 SPL - what if its not locked down?

I run some very shallow bays and beach my boat on purpose on occasion. My question is this:

On my smaller motors they have only locked down when in reverse, the SPL locks all the time, when I do have the misfortune of hitting a sandbar it is a much harder impact then I would like. I'm looking at power tilt and trim to add on and that would double as a jackplate to get the motor up a bit.

Is it supposed to be locking in the down position all the time? What if it didn't? I really don't have much juice in reverse to lift that heavy beast and to tell the truth it may be nice to have some assistance in tilting the thing manually.

What say you?

besides stop hitting sandbars...

You're on the right track. Go with the CMC trim & tilt and don't worry any more. The only down side is that it may pop up in hard reverse. If that's not an issue, you're all set.

On by 40 (no tilt/trim), I never run it locked, forward or reverse. The motor will lift up in reverse if you really goose it, but I usually don't dock or trailer with the 40 but use the kicker instead.
