My 1996 88 special runs great but recently the WOT rpm has increased to around 6200 from a max of 56-5700. dont know if its the rpm gauge acting up or the motor is really running this high. Speeds have not really changed. Probably the guage. What is a cheap way to accuratly check the rpm of the motor? Nothing has changed on the boat as far as trim, weight, ect.

Could also be a prop hub letting go. Try a different prop.

Re: 88 special rpm increase.

Right now I run a 15 and I have a 17 spare so I could try that. I know the rpms should be less than the original 56-5700 that i was getting but it might tell me something. I think I am going to spring the $35 for the optical tach from harbour freight and check the rpm at the flywheel first. On flat water with a capable driver I think i can manage it without hurting myself.

Re: 88 special rpm increase.

Ran boat Sunday with no changes and it ran like new. RPM at 5600+ max. Must have be electrical. Now to find that darn loose ground;). Actually, hadnt run the boat in about 2 weeks so I ran it on the hose in the driveway and the tach read 2500 at idle then dropped suddenly to 900-1000 where it is normally. Engine was at 900 the whole time so i figured a bad connection somewhere. never missed a beat on the water so I may never find the problem.
