My 1996 88 special runs great but recently the WOT rpm has increased to around 6200 from a max of 56-5700. dont know if its the rpm gauge acting up or the motor is really running this high. Speeds have not really changed. Probably the guage. What is a cheap way to accuratly check the rpm of the motor? Nothing has changed on the boat as far as trim, weight, ect.
. Actually, hadnt run the boat in about 2 weeks so I ran it on the hose in the driveway and the tach read 2500 at idle then dropped suddenly to 900-1000 where it is normally. Engine was at 900 the whole time so i figured a bad connection somewhere. never missed a beat on the water so I may never find the problem.
