88 rude 88hp?? driveshaft question

A friend at work is having trouble with his 88 Evinrude. He says it is 88 horse power.
The problem is a stripped spline in the power head. I am not familiar with these bigger motors at all so hopefully somewhere here can help.
If the spline is stripped does this mean a death sentence for the motor? would the crankshaft have to be replaced? or is the spline a separate part?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Splines are on the crank shaft, drive shaft, prop shaft, and power head, so at what point is the motor are the splines spun and what caused this to happen if anything. You said it is a 1988 88hp OMC what is the serial number.
