Just bought a pontoon boat powered with a 96 model 88 HP Johnson motor without oil injection. Motor runs great. I was wondering if there were any problems with this motor that I should be aware of.

Also I noticed that the motors HP is rated at the prop shaft. I was thinking that most motors were rated at the powerhead. If this is true, then does that mean my motor would be rated at more HP if it were rated at the powerhead?

Thanks for any replys, Sam :p

The 88 is one of the best motors ever made. It's the same engine as a 90, the 90 having oil injection. The same basic engine has appeared at one time or another as: 90, 100GT, 110, 112, 115 and 140.

It IS rated at the prop.

Does anyone know how the HP of this motor rates to motors that are rated at the powerhead, and which motors are rated at the power head. Merc, Yamaha, and so on as far as major brand motors.

Thanks
